BORN in 1987
Codenamed 'Liam's Pet Project' by the staff, the Farrelly family are very sentimental about this classic VW minibus. It was the very first vehicle that Liam & Mary put into service back when Farrelly's Coaches was founded in 1987. It was initially used for local Bingo runs, then it went on to operate contract work with Manford (the clothing factory) in Ballymahon in the early 1990's and was finally used for 'Discos' before it was retired.
Pictured opposite is the original purchase receipt for the VW Transporter. This has pride of place on the wall in the main office in Farrelly's Coaches in Kenagh, Co. Longford. |
restoration Process
Now that she has her own web page and a few avid followers, we are hopeful that the pace of the restoration will up a few notches and the VW will be brought back to her former glory, sooner rather than later. She moved from the old Church into our bright new bodyshop area in August 2018. We can see the VW has been fully stripped back to bare metal, treated and primed, ready for the next stage. The main suspension components and running gear have also been treated and primed. In fact everything original is present, seats, bumpers, doors, engine, gearbox, floor lining etc. Just not all attached to each other !
Farrelly's have 38 other vehicles to maintain and operate so the VW restoration will continue, albeit at a more (appropriate) leisurely pace.

Gosh! Looks like a tough jigsaw puzzle! It's a bit tricky at first till Piotr gets the hang of it. He's still having a smile on his face
JULY 2020
For the last year everyone was so busy that there was no progress at all on the VW restoration. However thanks to Covid 19. Liam has had more time to spend on the project. A lot of elbow grease has gone into filling and sanding the body in preparation for paint.
The painting has finally started and will be in the original red but with a white roof. We are all looking forward to see how it looks when painting is complete.
